Got Goji? February 2006
By Deborah Doc Watson
If you had a choice how long would you choose to live? You probably think this is a silly question since we know we can’t live forever, but, what I am referring to here is living not only a long life but a healthy one as well. Around the world people of other cultures have longer life spans than we do here in the United States. In fact, only 3.3 percent of the US population will live to blow out the candles on their 80th birthday cake.
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, most of us can expect an average lifespan of approximately 77 years and since I am almost at the three quarter mark (56 years of age) that doesn’t sound very reassuring. Of those people who live to at least 55, a full 20 percent will have some degree of impairment. By the ages of 65 to 74, fully one-third of us will be impaired in our ability to walk, remember, or perform simple tasks and by the age of 75 nearly half of us will require outside assistance.
In some remote locations around the world, life expectancy of more than 100 years is not uncommon? But it isn’t just the fact that they live a long time, they also enjoy abundant health and happiness, and unlike us they are virtually free from the ravages of disease — diseases that we see in our society like fibromyalgia, depression, anxiety, panic disorder, sexual dysfunction, chronic fatigue syndrome. In fact, their vocabularies have no words for these debilitating conditions and yet these conditions have become all too familiar to us.
Extreme longevity and health are not exclusive to just a few small hamlets but many pockets of longevity around the world. They probably don’t know each other but they have all share some important traits.
· They live in isolated and sometimes inaccessible places, away from the harmful influences of modern Western cilivization. That means they don’t eat processed or “fast foods”.
· Their diet primarily consists of fresh fruits, vegetable and whole grains, with some animal protein but low animal fat.
· Many of the world’s longest living people consume on a regular daily basis a tiny red fruit that is considered to be the world’s most powerful anti-aging food: the goji berry.
If you haven’t heard of the goji berry before you are not alone. In Central Asia the people there love and cherish this berry so much that they devote two weeks every year to festivals in the berry’s honor. Also know as the “happy berry”, goji has a number of health benefits that anyone wanting to extend their lifespan would take on a daily basis. Here are the top benefits of Goji:
1. Extends life, protecting your body from premature aging through its powerful antioxidant action.
2. Increases your energy and strength, especially when fighting disease.
